Freewheeling Race

Eighteen riders assembled at the clubrooms on a cold and very windy Sunday morning for the now traditional end of year fun event.  All set off together, heading out by Crowbyres towards Newcastleton before turning right to head by the Flex and St. Leonards to the top gates at the Moor for the annual ‘freewheeling' race. With one crank strapped to the bike frame to stop any attempt at pedalling, Organiser Mick Brown released the riders one at a time down the hill in the direction of Pilmuir. There were categories for both road and off-road type tyres, to give those with the heavier knobbly tyres a chance of a prize.  The gale-force north-westerly wind proved more of a hindrance than a help, and  most riders struggled for distance up the hill towards the junction at the Wulliestruther road-end. Once again, David Henderson was the only rider to make it over the crest, eventually coming to a halt near Pilmuir.  Malcolm Heatley took second place, stopping short of the crest.

After the event, most of the riders set off in two groups to regrouped at the Country Inn to meet friends and guests for the scheduled meal stop.
