HAWICK
CYCLING CLUB YOUTH SECTION
At
the beginning of the year Hawick Cycling Club applied for funding under
the Awards for All programme.
In May 2006 under this programme, SportScotland awarded the club a grant of £5000. This funding
allowed the Club to buy a fleet of bikes and 2 mountain bikes, 4 road
bikes and safety equipment of sufficient quality for competitive racing
were obtained.
The
Club wished to develop its youth section beyond its current capacity.
Two groups of young people will benefit from this grant.
Firstly, those who are already involved in the sport but do not
have the means to buy a second bike to experience other disciplines of
the sport. Secondly, those
young people who have been unable to try the sport because the cost of a
bike suitable for competitive racing is beyond their means.
This
project would promote cycling as a sport to young people and increase
opportunities and access to participation.
The
youth section was formed with the active support of
Hawick
High School
.
Two
of the Club’s coaches Mick Brown and Alex Forrest worked with teachers
to promote cycling as a sport. The Club is proud of its successes in
coaching youths in both the cross-country, road and hill-climb
disciplines.
Training
sessions are held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5.30pm at the Clubrooms
in
Teviot Crescent
. If anyone would like any more information please contact…. Alex
Forrest or Mick Brown on 01450 378929
