H.C.C.
have organised 2 challenging cycle rides (Audaxes)
of 105km (65mls) and 204km (127mls) through scenic countryside.
Both
rides start in Hawick on
20th
May 2007
from H.C.C. Clubrooms in Teviot
Crescent
opposite Somerfield Supermarket.
These rides have now been dedicated to the late Allan Ainslie, the
original organiser of these events and who passed away in 2006. The
204km ride known as “The Debateable Lands” starts at 08.00 hrs and
the 105km ride known as “The Riccarton Line” starts at 09.00 hrs.
Both
rides go to Newcastleton for their first control (food stop), but by
different routes. From this
control point the rides continue in the same direction to Harelaw to
then turn left at the crossroads. The
route continues together for another 3 miles before splitting at the now
closed Huntsman’s
Inn
junction, there is a checkpoint here for card stamping purposes.
The
Riccarton Line turns left here and returns via Sorbietrees to the
control at Newcastleton and then back to Hawick.
The
Debateable Lands continues on the B6318 and goes through the countryside
that the name derives from passing Roadhead and Kirkcambeck on the way
to control 2 at Greenhead in the Old Forge Tearooms.
On
leaving the control the route follows along Hadrians Wall still on the
B6318 to Chollerford roundabout where we turn left to follow the
North
Tyne
on the B6320 to
Bellingham
control which is situated in the Fountain Cottage Tearooms.
Now
it is time to start heading home so we follow the
North
Tyne
up to Kielder to the Anglers Arms for another control before crossing
the border back into
Scotia
and making for
Bonchester
Bridge
and back into Hawick. The
final control for both rides is back at the clubrooms for a warm
friendly welcome, something to eat and a chance to recount how your
day’s outing has gone.
